"Remaking a Dark Tale, With Real-Life Notes"
The New York Times, September 19, 2010
An article about Hannah Lash, a strikingly gifted young composer who overcame a huge emotional and professional setback this summer as she completed Blood Rose, a 40-minute chamber opera based on the tale of "Beauty and the Beast." The opera will have its premiere this Friday, Sept. 24, at Park Avenue Christian Church in Manhattan, part of the church's Arts at the Park series. Featured in the performance are alto Kirsten Sollek, countertenor Eric Brenner and the JACK Quartet (who'll also play two of Hannah's quartet works). They'll all be perfoming the opera again on Saturday night.
Sad to say, I'll miss both performances, but for good cause. Today, Dr. LP and I are finally escaping for a substantial vacation, our first in about three years. We'll be back to work on October 4.
Until then: Addio, addio, senza rancor.
