Argento Chamber Ensemble at the Austrian Cultural Forum
The New York Times, September 4, 2010
In which the consistently impressive Argento players once again do right by the music of Austrian composer Georg Friedrich Haas, one of the most striking and original voices in contemporary music. I've more to say and no time to say it right now, so instead I'll remind you that you've got two more chances to hear Haas's music during the Moving Sounds Festival 2010 this weekend, both at the Austrian Cultural Forum.
On Sunday afternoon at 1pm, Argento violinist Miranda Cuckson and pianist Joanna Chao play Haas's Duo for violin and prepared piano; at 8pm, the JACK Quartet plays his String Quartet No. 3, a work performed in absolute pitch darkness. The JACK Quartet played the work in Los Angeles in April; Mark Swed's lively report is one you don't want to miss. Alex Ross has something to say on the subject, too.
