The whole time Diana Damrau was cavorting on the Carnegie Hall podium – during a long evening's third and final encore, understand – I was praying aloud to my companion, "Please let the Times photographer be getting this." Had I seen that Hiroyuki Ito was on duty, I'd have known not to worry – Hiro's always got exactly the shot I've hoped for, only better.
