On Friday night at Issue Project Room, the eminent cellist Charles Curtis presented an intense and beautiful evening of recent works by Alvin Lucier, in the presence of the composer and a capacity crowd. Glacier, for unaccompanied cello, found Curtis obscured from view, playing long tones that calved into a plethora of singing and groaning harmonics. In Orpheus Variations, for cello with seven wind instruments and seven dancers, Lucier transformed a sonority recalled from a Stravinsky ballet into an elegant ritual in sound and motion, the latter choreographed by Abigail Levine.
I'll have a more complete review on National Sawdust Log in the week ahead. The program repeats on Saturday night, but appears to be sold out in advanceā¦ definitely check in before you head out.
